Waterproofing Membrane

We recommend the use of Nudura “Peel and Stick” damp proof membrane to protect ICF from ground moisture. The membrane is a self-adhesive waterproofing product composed of SBS modified bitumen with a tri-laminated woven polyethylene facer. A silicone release film protects the adhesive side until installation, and the membrane is applied directly to the ICF surface.

The Nudura Peel & Stick membrane is manufactured for Nudura and printed with the Nudura logo.

Summer grade

Application temperature: 10°C to 50°C (50°F to 122°F).

Winter grade

Application temperature: -10°C to 40°C (14°F to 104°F).

Surface Preparation

Ensure the surface is smooth, clean, dry and free from dust or debris. Clean, dry and even surfaces normally do not require priming for dampproofing. If the EPS has been exposed to sunlight for an extended period, remove the yellow dust coating before application.

Important: If a primer is required because of dust or oxidized EPS, use a compatible water-based membrane primer. Never use a solvent-based primer because it can damage EPS foam.

Installation

1Prepare and prime

If required, apply compatible water-based primer and allow it to dry completely. Install the membrane the same day.

2Apply vertically

Remove the release film and install vertically with a minimum 3 in (76 mm) side overlap.

3Seal and roll

Use a compatible sealant at the top edge and footing transition, then apply even pressure with a membrane roller.

4Protect before backfill

Use self-compacting granular fill and install protection board wherever backfill could damage the membrane.

Where horizontal installation is necessary, provide a minimum 6 in (152 mm) overlap. For the top 12 in of the foundation wall, install 1/4 in Hardiboard mechanically fastened to the ICF webs at 16 in on centre using corrosion-resistant round-head screws.

Code Compliance

The report by Halsall Engineering (now WSP Group) provides the opinion that the Nudura Dampproofing Membrane meets the intent of the 2006 Ontario Building Code and, by inference, the current BC Building Code.

  • The self-adhering polymer-modified bitumen is compatible with EPS-based ICFs when solvent-based primers are not used.
  • Its water vapour transmission is well below 1.0 g/m²/day and adequately resists below-grade water vapour.
  • The membrane layers provide resistance to soil gas comparable to or better than materials already approved by the OBC.
